Qualcomm’s new AR Smart Viewer is sleek and wireless
The company wants hardware makers to use its platforms to "unlock the metaverse"

Qualcomm announced its XR1-based smart AR viewer last year before the “metaverse” became a buzzword.

Now, it’s launching its new XR2-powered reference AR glasses so hardware manufacturers can “enable immersive experiences that unlock the metaverse.”

But if we look beyond the marketing speak, the company’s new headset has gone wireless with a sleeker design.

Google Just Acquired Smart Glasses Startup North | #Acquisitions | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Last Friday, it was reported that Canadian smart glasses startup North was on the verge of being snapped up by Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Today, it’s official.

North announced the acquisition on both Twitter and in an official blog. Details regarding the terms of the sale were scant, though a Globe and Mail scoop from Friday put the number at around $180 million. North’s remaining staff will, however, be staying in Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada and joining a Google team also based there.

Google Glass gets a surprise upgrade and new frames | #SmartGlasses #AR #STEM

Google Glass gets a surprise upgrade and new frames | #SmartGlasses #AR #STEM  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

It's 2019, and guess what? Google just unveiled its newest version of Glass. It's not made to be a widespread consumer product, but there are business users who will care. And the latest Glass Enterprise Edition 2, with key upgraded specs, shows where most smartglasses are at.

You might remember Glass as a strange 2013 footnote, but Glass has stuck around: it became an enterprise-targeted device in 2017, and has been used in a variety of other assistive ways.

Plenty of other AR headsets have been moving into the enterprise space over the last couple of years too, from Microsoft HoloLens 2 to Vuzix' glasses.

While the single-display design of Glass isn't going to allow 3D augmented reality like what you'd experience on HoloLens 2, there could be applications for other types of useful augmented reality via the improved built-in camera and upgraded onboard processor. Google's announcement touts the new onboard Qualcomm XR1 chip as enabling "support for computer vision and advanced machine learning capabilities.

Apple said to be considering wearable glasses, augmented reality | #SmartGlasses #AR #RA #AugmentedReality | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it
When the idea of wearable computing was first proposed, analysts and industry executives jumped on the concept like rats off a sinking ship. Tablet sales were already fluttering, ahead of their long slide, smartphones clearly weren’t going to carry the market forever, and various companies from small players like Fitbit and Pebble to entrenched companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft all were hungry to open a new frontier in wearable computing.

Google makes Glass Enterprise Edition 2 available for direct purchase | #Privacy

Google makes Glass Enterprise Edition 2 available for direct purchase | #Privacy  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Developers and businesses can now buy Google's Glass Enterprise Edition 2 directly from a handful of hardware resellers, Google announced Tuesday. Previously, interested enterprise customers had to work with Google partners to build custom software for the augmented reality glasses that fit their specific needs.

After Google Glass failed to take off as a consumer product, Google revived the AR glasses for the enterprise in 2017. It launched the second edition in May of last year. They're used in a variety of sectors, including logistics, manufacturing and field services

"Since Glass Enterprise Edition 2 launched last May, we've seen strong demand from developers and businesses who are interested in building new, helpful enterprise solutions for Glass," Google's Jay Kothari wrote in a blog post.

The glasses are built on Android, enabling businesses to integrate the services and APIs they already use. Google is also sharing new open source applications and code samples to help developers build applications for the glasses.

Epson launches $499 smart glasses using Android, Windows compute | #AugmentedReality #AR

Epson launches $499 smart glasses using Android, Windows compute | #AugmentedReality #AR  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Epson is launching a new version of its Moverio smart glasses--the Moverio BT-30C--with a $499 price point and setup that's likely to make them more appealing for corporations.

I know you're thinking "smart glasses again?!?" But this time may be different. Yes, Google Glass resulted in glassholes and a lack of legitimate use cases. But like augmented reality devices like Microsoft's HoloLens, there are real returns and use cases for smart glasses. Those uses revolve around training, drones, maintenance, entertainment and productivity.

The other thing to note is that Epson has been in the smart glasses game since 2011 and has been tweaking their Moverio lineup ever since. Toss in the reality that Epson has a real sales channel and now has solved some of its compute problems with Android smartphone and Windows laptop tethering and smart glasses could be a more viable augmented reality vehicle.

"The idea is that the smart glasses now create a multi-screen canvas, said Eric Mizufuka, product manager for augmented reality at Epson America.

Apple may be eyeing Google Glass-like wearable AR glasses | #SmartGlasses #AR #RA #AugmentedReality | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it
Apple is working on wearable digital glasses that would connect wirelessly to the iPhone and show content in the wearer’s field of vision, according to a news report.

The iPhone maker has indicated previously its interest in augmented reality. Unlike the simulated world of virtual reality, AR supplements with images and information the user’s normal view of the world.

“We are high on AR for the long run. We think there are great things for customers and a great commercial opportunity,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an earnings call in July, talking about the need for Apple’s devices to work with other developers’ products, such as the successful Pokémon Go game.

The company has also hired VR and AR experts and made some acquisitions that could help it meet its AR goals. Apple has discussed the glasses project with potential suppliers, reported Bloomberg on Monday, citing people familiar with those discussions.
