From Pedagogy to Communagogy and Everything in Between

From Pedagogy to Communagogy and Everything in Between  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
There was once only one “agogy” and now there are many. Most educators are intimately familiar with pedagogy – the art and science of educating and teaching children. Some are also familiar with andragogy – the art and science of educating and teaching adults. Recently a few more agogies have surfaced so I thought it was high time to explore some of these new and emerging ideas. We’ll start with the already familiar just to warm up.

Seven Laws of the Self-directed Learner | Andragogy | Heutagogy | eSkills

Seven Laws of the Self-directed Learner | Andragogy | Heutagogy | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Dr. Bernard Bull is Assistant Vice President of Academics for Continuing and Distance Education & Associate Professor of Education at Concordia University Wisconsin.

In 1888, John Milton Gregory published The Seven Laws of Teaching, providing instruction on what contributes to being an effective teacher.  While this list is over a hundred years old, most readers today will resonate with this list of laws. This is one of a dozen or so books that I try to read each year.  It is a short read that one can usually finish in a few hours.  As I picked up the book to read again today, I started to think about these laws in terms of self-directed learning, rewriting the laws from a self-directed learning perspective (which, by the way, fits nicely with law #7).

Below is the original list of “elements” from which Gregory devised his seven laws.  Using these as a starting point, I revised them to create the seven elements of a self-directed learner, adding one additional item that did not seem to have adequate emphasis in Gregory’s original list (although it is embedded within several of them).

Nocking The Arrow: Self-Directed vs. Self-Determined Learning; What's the Difference?

Nocking The Arrow: Self-Directed vs. Self-Determined Learning; What's the Difference? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

In this age of abundance of information, shifting classroom pedagogy isn't nearly enough to make learning in school more relevant and authentic for the learner. Self-directed learning (andragogy), and self-determined learning (heutagogy) are the ideals necessary in making students "future ready" to live and learn in a web connected world.

While original research applied these concepts to mature learners, it has become apparent that even young children have an abundant capacity for recognizing and directing their own learning. Anyone who has observed toddlers learning how to walk and talk understand the motivation and skill development that quickly develops during these processes.

Considered by some to be on a learning continuum, self-directed learning and self-determined learning have at least one distinct difference. What is this difference, and why should educators care? - See more at: http://rtschuetz.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/self-directed-vs-self-determined.html?spref=tw#sthash.oSVChVeN.dpuf

Since "upwards of ninety percent of our learning will occur outside formal educational settings" (Jennings, 2010), in the age of abundance of information, students should be motivated to reflect on how they are learning. That is what is self-directed learning

It is not possible for a human starts to run without has learnt to walk first. That is why I shared this short (but interesting) infographic in which details about the principles of adult learning are exposed, and whoever is interested in learning more about Andragogy should know before going deeper in the concept .This little introduction presents what adults are (how there are motivated, how they use their experiences); how adults learn (all that they want to learn); and how those principles should be applied (use the information of “what adults are” and “how adults learn” together). I consider that there is no another simple to be introduced to the world of the adult learning for beginners.

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

While acknowledging that the whole concept of self-determination – or ‘Google learning’ as it has been called, pejoratively, in certain circles – is fraught with the potential for missing the point, being distracted into rabbit warrens or just getting bad information, we would like to emphasise that this is only a potential.

===> Any learning theory is only as good as the way in which it is applied and worked through, and we have seen it produce highly successful results where correctly applied, in the right circumstances. <===

Watch this space for chapter and verse, as we will soon be publishing case studies of several recent programmes that feature high levels of learner self-direction.

Learners are changing, learning is changing – and heutagogy can give important clues about rebalancing the burden of responsibilities and permissions in an always-on, networked, instructorless, post-course world.

2- educadores mantem foco no processo de aprendizagem ao inves do conteudo

3- evita-se aprendizagem focada no educador

4- migra-se para o "mundo da aprendizagem"

Nunca é demais relembrar os 4 principios da aprendizagem de adultos , segundo a teoria de Malcom Knowles;

This article is very insightful. It clearly explains and demonstrates the differences that have occured in education over the last 20 years, particularly in the context of technology. Mobile learning is becoming more prominent in classrooms and requires teachers to be active participants in the use of technology.
