IoT: Don't Forget Privacy And Security While Racing To The Price Bottom

IoT: Don't Forget Privacy And Security While Racing To The Price Bottom | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
There is no doubt that companies of all shapes and sizes are increasing their spend in internet-of-things (IoT) technology. In fact, IDC projects this to be a $1.4 trillion market by 2021. With the increased spend and demand by consumers for low-price and high-value IoT devices, makers of these connected technologies have put a premium on affordability. The race to the bottom on price has inadvertently created major risks for organizations and consumers, according to PwC’s “Uncovering the Potential of the Internet of Things” report.

The pressure is on, and we see many makers of connected devices that produce IoT products as inexpensively as possible skipping important steps such as the design of security and privacy protections. This is generating significant new risks that are not widely understood during a time when consumers are more concerned about price than privacy and security. Risks include physical, software, encryption and network attacks, all of which could have wide-ranging effects on our daily lives, from taking over a connected car to obtaining sensitive data from a connected home to accessing a private network via a wearable device.

Also, there are societal concerns, including getting access to valuable intellectual property, sabotage to companies or governments and espionage. Consumer-focused companies need to ensure they are meeting their customers’ concerns. Simply put, the proper cybersecurity and privacy measures can aid businesses in seeing the full potential of IoT.

The Hierarchy of IoT “Thing” Needs | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy

The Hierarchy of IoT “Thing” Needs | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

To define an IoT “Thing,” I’m going to employ Maslow’s hierarchy of needs — that well-known human psychology paradigm typically displayed in the shape of a pyramid, with the most fundamental human needs (physiological needs like air, food and water) at the bottom and rising to the most esoteric needs (self-actualization or expression of full potential) at the apex.

The reason to think this way is to enable the use of familiar paradigms when “Thing” architecture and interaction models are designed. For example, consider this simple question: “What should you consider when purchasing an IoT thing?” With this new thinking, the answer becomes: “The same stuff you consider when you hire a new employee.” Trustworthiness, reliability and ability to work well with others form a great basis for consideration in both cases.

Roger Smith's curator insight, April 9, 2015 12:53 AM

After testing the security of six Internet of Things (IoT) devices commonly used in homes, Veracode security researchers found that product manufacturers don't put enough focus on security and privacy as a design priority; this puts users "at risk for an attack or physical intrusion." They found vulnerabilities in the devices that could potentially act as a "pathway for robbery, theft of sensitive data or even stalking."

Why IoT Security Is So Critical | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy

Why IoT Security Is So Critical | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Twenty years ago, if you told me my phone could be used to steal the password to my email account or to take a copy of my fingerprint data, I would’ve laughed at you and said you watch too much James Bond. But today, if you tell me that hackers with malicious intents can use my toaster to break into my Facebook account, I will panic and quickly pull the plug from the evil appliance.

What is evident is that the IoT will become an important part of our lives very soon, and its security is one of the major issues that must be addressed via active participation by the entire global tech community. Will we be able to harness this most-hyped, emerging technology that will undoubtedly revolutionize the world, or will we end up opening a Pandora’s Box that will spiral the world into a new age of mayhem and chaos? Let’s hope for the former.
