Biomimetics 3D Printing Challenge Now Open

Biomimetics 3D Printing Challenge Now Open | Biomimicry | Scoop.it

Crowdsourced innovation service Innonatives has posted a challenge seeking “radical ideas” on how to combine biomimetics and 3D printing for sustainability.  Innonatives is a platform where any company may post a significant challenge and seek the public’s assistance in solving the issue. In this case, the partnership of Biomimetics Hessen and the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID) are posting a major challenge. They invite the community to:

«Present Their most brilliant and radical ideas on how Both techniques (Biomimetics and 3D Printing) can be used in combination to generate radical improvements towards environmental, social and economic sustainability».

It’s not clear when the challenge closes, but the ten best ideas as determined by an “expert jury” will be presented in a special event on 15 October in Germany."

Science of Bioinspiration Is Spreading, But Lacks Commercial Teeth

Science of Bioinspiration Is Spreading, But Lacks Commercial Teeth | Biomimicry | Scoop.it

"Can innovators learn anything about sustainability from the minimalist lifestyle of a two-toed sloth? [...]  the San Diego Zoo Global Centre for Bioinspiration, which hosted the two-day event, is focused on taking a much more rigorous and “hard science” approach to bioinspiration—a largely collaborative field that typically requires a mix of disciplines to move from scientific discovery to a new commercial product. [...] As an industry, however, bioinspiration suffers from a lack of public awareness, uncertainty about how the field is defined, and how “serious” it really is, according to scientists who specialize in bioinspiration. For many innovation leaders and investors, bioinspiration conjures an amorphous field with mushy scientific discipline."

Biomimicry and Its Role in Business Evolution

Biomimicry and Its Role in Business Evolution | Biomimicry | Scoop.it

In 2010, a group of specialists in the UK set up a collaborative called BCI: Biomimicry for Creative Innovation on the following premises: business models and practices need transforming to become fit-for-purpose for the world we now live in; the knowledge, understanding and tools we need for business transformation can be found in nature; and business can create the conditions conducive for life (not just reduce its negative impact on life) and so business can ‘sustain’ and also ‘thrive’ in our lifetime and beyond. BCI’s strap line is ’ecological thinking for radical transformation’.
