Unified Military Intelligence Picture Helping to Dispel the Fog of War - Armed with Science | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it
Armed with Science Unified Military Intelligence Picture Helping to Dispel the Fog of War Armed with Science Insight would enable analysts to collaborate on the fly via an intuitive user interface that speeds comprehension of complex information...
Phillip Trotter's insight:

The output of DARPA’s capstone ISR processing program will help  analysts in multiple industries (not just defence and military)  to make sense of the huge volumes of intelligence-rich information available to them from existing sensors and data sources. It will be worth tracking the BAE team and DARPA reports that are made public over the period of the program  at conferences to gain insights into display modalities used and types of data fusion techniques employed to see implications and opportunities for civilian applications.

The Spectacular Thefts of Apollo Robbins, Gentleman Pickpocket

The Spectacular Thefts of Apollo Robbins, Gentleman Pickpocket | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it
Apollo Robbins takes things from people’s jackets, pants, purses, wrists, fingers, and necks, then returns them in amusing and mind-boggling ways.
Phillip Trotter's insight:

Understanding how our perception system and sense of time and space work are increasingly key to how we design great user interfaces and user expereinces. Apollo Robbins is one of my favourite entertainers - a magician pickpocket, who in the National Geographic series BrainGames - explains how our perception and attention can be manipulated and managed to distract and misfocus.   Great article by Adam Green in the New Yorker on his background, work and approach to what he does. If you like magic and interested in human perception its well worth a read.

Phillip Trotter's insight:

Davide Casali is an awesome user experience designer. Together with Alessandro Morandi and Marco Columbo he created the BakerFramework -  one of the best open source ebook publishing platforms available - (if you don't know it and build book or magazine apps for ipad - then check it out - it is  awesome).  His blog is http://intenseminimalism.com/ is always worth reading (especially his design analysis posts). If you are tracking evolution of publishing design, interested in user experience design or want a better handle on understanding where ebook publishing can evolve - then spend 10 minutes reading this post. it is worth it.

A New Mobile UX Design Material | Smashing UX Design

A New Mobile UX Design Material | Smashing UX Design | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

I was 13 years old when my local public library got a copy of Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson's  1981 book "The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation". I borrowed that book as often as I possibly could, I learned to sketch and animate from it and used to practise drawing the characters and forms within it.  The book effectively documents the principles that Disney Studio's helped develop that define compelling animation.  There is a great article on UX design in Smashing Magazine explaining how the concepts in the book relate to modern user interface design. Worth reading. Click on the image or title to learn more.

Leap 3D Offers Amazing Gesture-Based Control of Your Computer for Just $70 | Singularity Hub | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

It is going to be interesting finding out how much of this is hype and how much of this is reality.  Initial videos are intriguing. A startup called Leap Motion has announced the development of the Leap 3D motion control device that is sensitive down to 1/100 of a millimeter – that’s 200 times better than other sensors (i.e: Kinect). At this resolution, the Leap software is able to resolve the motion of individual fingers, allowing for intuitive gesture controls like pinch-to-zoom, highly accurate virtual drawing, and manipulation of 3D models.
