Making big data work: smart, sustainable, and safe cities

The goal of the present thematic series is to showcase some of the most relevant contributions submitted to the ‘Telecom Italia Big Data Challenge 2014’ and to provide a discussion venue about recent advances in the appplication of mobile phone and social media data to the study of individual and collective behaviors. Particular attention is devoted to data-driven studies aimed at understanding city dynamics. These studies include: modeling individual and collective traffic patterns and automatically identifying areas with traffic congestion, creating high-resolution population estimates for Milan inhabitants, clustering urban dynamics of migrants and visitors traveling to a city for business or tourism, and investigating the relationship between urban communication and urban happiness.

Networks of Sensors - Advanced Sensor Networks Developed for Heathrow Airport - Articles - Open Innovation

Networks of Sensors - Advanced Sensor Networks Developed for Heathrow Airport - Articles - Open Innovation | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

odelling of air pollution around busy urban areas such as airports is a complex task. Ground stations for monitoring air quality and compliance reporting are usually limited in number, because of cost, to a few strategic locations. More recently given the advances in sensors, electronics and communication technologies it is now possible to design and build networked sensor nodes at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems. These breakthroughs in technology make it possible to implement large-scale sensor networks in city environments. A team led by Professor Rod Jones at the University of Cambridge, funded by NERC, is now doing just that for Heathrow Airport to better understand and develop sophisticated computer models for air quality in the vicinity of this busy international airport. to learn more click on the image or the title.

Why we need a standard for the Internet of Things

Why we need a standard for the Internet of Things | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

The Internet of Things is supposed to connect every aspect of our lives from our homes and cars to the objects we wear and the goods we consume. It’s even connecting ice machines. But one thing the Internet of Things lacks is a unifying standard. Artile from GigaOM describing moves by a bunch of telecom operators to defin an M2M sensoer network communications standard. This is a meme that is getting more energy behind it but it will be interesting to see if it is simpy a set of companies trying to force a bigger telecom company standard through or wether it gets widescale industry and developer support. Like Big Data, Operational Intelligence is Evolving to Deliver Right Time Value | SmartData Collective

Like Big Data, Operational Intelligence is Evolving to Deliver Right Time Value | SmartData Collective | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it
Ventana Research has been researching and advocating operational intelligence for the past 10 years, but not always with that name.
Phillip Trotter's insight:

Interesting article by Tony Cosentino explaining the differences and different perpectives between Operational Intelligence and Big Data. Operational intelligence overlaps in many ways with big data. In technological terms, both deal with a diversity of data sources and data structures, both need to provide data in a timely manner, and both must deal with the exponential growth of data. Many early big data examples - such as log analyis to improve performance are arguably operational intelligence. Inside IT departments OI is largely focused on traditional system performance, however outside of IT and in other domains - for example City Management - operational intelligence may well be a more appropriate term than Big Data analytics. Indiana's Sewers: An Outpost on the Internet of Things

Indiana's Sewers: An Outpost on the Internet of Things | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

A great article on practical implications of Internet of things. An unlikely place to look for the latest trend for the Internet of Things is inside the sewers of the City of South Bend, Indiana. For the past six years, South Bend's city managers have been working with a group of consultants from IBM, nearby Notre Dame University and others to instrument the city's sewers as a means of delivering better service and saving hundreds of millions of dollars in capital improvements.
