Advantages Of Using Both Synchronous and Asynchronous Technologies In An Online Learning Environment.

 

Online learning environments are becoming more frequent in teaching and learning than ever before (Bonk & Zhang, 2006; Er, Özden, & Arifoglu, 2009; Skylar, 2009). Synchronous and asynchronous learning technologies are the two most common online learning types (Hrastinski, 2008; Er et al., 2009; Simonson, Smaldino, Albright, & Zvacek, 2012). The purpose of this article is to discuss the advantages of using both synchronous and asynchronous technologies in an online learning environment.

This article suggests general advantages and disadvantages of different online learning delivery methods and strategies. Synchronous online learning is real time face-to-face computer mediated learning. It uses tools that allow participants to see and hear each other, as well as create and share multimedia. Online learning encourages feedback, collaboration, flexibility, and meets learning needs of students. Asynchronous online learning allows students to reflect before responding or presenting work. This article finds that a combination of both methods can be used to best meet learner needs.
