Digital Literacies and 21st Century Skills | There's No Algorithm for the 21st Century IRL

Digital Literacies and 21st Century Skills | There's No Algorithm for the 21st Century IRL | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
On this week's podcast, Simon and Jade primarily discuss the work of Ito et al. (2020), which focuses on "connected learning," a seemingly more holistic approach to education that incorporates socio-cultural contexts, multiple literacies, and technology into curricula. With additional references to Soule and Warrick (2015), as well as Ken Robinson's talk on Changing Paradigms, we ultimately conclude that there are no alternatives to real-life interactions. Technology itself is merely a tool we can use to enhance learning experiences and our lives, but not to completely replace those human connections and interactions we need to develop crucial 21st century skills.

Connected Learning: Harnessing the Information Age to Make Learning More Powerful | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

This report introduces connected learning, a promising educational approach that uses digital media to engage students’ interests and instill deeper learning skills, such as communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. The report lists four elements constituting connected learning’s emphasis on bridging school, popular culture, home, and the community to create an environment in which students engage in and take responsibility for their learning.

Research: Education Could Use More 'Connected Learning' -- Campus Technology

Research: Education Could Use More 'Connected Learning' -- Campus Technology | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it
The possibilities inherent in digital learning won't in and of themselves flatten the global playing field for students, according to new research, unless we first give attention to the idea of creating "connected learning environments."...

Connie Yowell, director of education at the MacArthur Foundation, which supports the Research Network says it all for me: "In today's networked world that is so rich in social connection, we have been handed the ability to suddenly be able to make hands-on, real-world, inquiry-based learning far more accessible. It's not a question of how we can achieve this--we have that in our sights now--it's a question of will."

8 Things to Look For in Today's Classroom

8 Things to Look For in Today's Classroom | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

Although this was posted in 2013, the ideas of what we should look for in our classroom are still relevant. George Couros provides an image (as seen above) as well as more detailed explanations for each suggestion. Ask yourself if your learners have these options in your classroom.

1. Voice - the ability to learn from others and share their learning.

2. Choice - about how they learn and what they learn.

3. Time for reflection  (often overlooked in our very busy classrooms).

4. Opportunities for innovation

5. Critical thinkers - asking the questions and challenging what they see, respectfully.

6. Problem solvers/finders - what is a problem the learners see? How would they solve the problem?

7. Self-assessment - do your learners assess themselves or do you do the assessment? What would happen if they were given this opportunity?

8. Connected learning - bringing in experts from your community or further afield (perhaps by using Skype).

The post is worth reading as he provides additional insights to each area. In addition he provides one more piece that is also critical in your classroom. Click through to the post to learn more.

Have you had people ask you why you choose to use infographics in your classroom? This presentation is by Mia MacMeekin, who has created many great infographics (some of which have been posted on this Sccop.it). The best way to access this is in PDF format. This file is quite large so here is a direct link to it: http://anethicalisland.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/rscon-presentation-22.pdf
