Awakenings: Oh, my! Pie! Pie! Pie! | Human Interest | Scoop.it
My! My! My! It's Pie! Pie! Pie! Not just any pie but this pie is filled with blueberries, or star berries as the Native Americans called them. The humble blueberry is one of few blue foods, one of nature’s super foods, and one that is native to the Americas. The state of Maine is the larger producer of blueberries in the world with more than 60,000 acres being farmed. In the United States and Canada, harvesting season can run from early May in the warmer portions to the end of August in the northern-most area.

"This Day in History: April 17, 1964

Today, focus is on the Ford Mustang, which was first shown to the public at the 1964 New York World's Fair. It was a smash hit! No wonder in 1964, Motor Trend's Car of the Year award went to the entire Ford lineup, recognizing its combination of design, engineering excellence, and performance.

It began with a vision...

A car that would seat four people, have bucket seats, a floor mounted shifter, be no more than 180 inches long, weigh less than 2500 pounds, and sell for less than $2500.00. ~1961, Lee Iacocca

"Many foods and recipes were originally established strictly for purposes of serving at breakfast. Some found their place as a brunch staple. Through the decades, times have changed and what was once considered a breakfast food or dish has become quite universal when it comes to time of day for serving/eating.

At first glance, this next celebration might appear to be one of the few non-sweet days. That is, of course, if you overlook the dark brown sugar, molasses or honey. Then, more likely than not, the next thought will reflect upon Thanksgiving or Christmas. However, there is no written or verbal law, stating that you can only enjoy this specialty's nice and crispy caramelized sugar-coated outside skin in November or December.

"The sound of the 80s - totally tubular! The 80s' hits defined the MTV generation with pop classic songs that are still considered 'tubular' after over 30 years on the airways. If you don't recall the term 'tubular', it was used mostly in the 80's, or by people mocking the 80's, to describe something 'awesome' or 'excellent'."

Awakenings: Just zip it!

Awakenings: Just zip it! | Human Interest | Scoop.it

"It's never too late in the day to learn something new, especially when that something is a necessary 'connection'. The most popular is probably found on a pair of blue jeans. That is, unless you prefer the skinny, latex pull-on styles that hug your hips and legs like a glove. You know, the 'candle' pants...those that you feel like you were melted and poured in. For today, however, we'll stick with those that necessitate the zipper.

Begin with an image - fashion without the zipper...

Ladies' undergarments either laced or hooked as well.
A woman's attire in the 19th century was composed of 6 layers. Even men's trousers...NO zipper!

Proceed to your closet - How many articles of clothing do you have that have a zipper? Think about each of those items NOT having the zipper but all of those openings that need to be closed having snaps or hooks & eyes instead. Consider it is Monday morning and time to get ready for work. Need an extra hour? Two? Definitely need more than two hands, especially the ladies!

The myth than garlic deters vampires is commonplace thanks to Hollywood and popular literature, so today "Vampires, beware!" Did you know it is also thought to protect against the evil eye and to ward off jealous nymphs said to terrorize pregnant women and engaged maidens? In addition, despite its pungent odor and taste, garlic enhances the flavor of almost any kind of food anywhere in the world and is well known for its diverse medicinal properties.

"This Day in History: April 15, 1912

The unthinkable happened. The unimaginable occurred. At 2:20 am (2 hrs 40 mins after striking the iceberg), the ocean vessel once deemed unsinkable leaves over 1,500 souls in the depths of her final wake. The water in the area in which Titanic sank was lethally cold, a temperature of 28 °F (−2 °C). A human body will perish in fifteen minutes or less in such water, even for people young and physically fit."

"Yes! Indeed, SCRaBBLe is a lot of fun! However, there is more to SCRaBBLe than simply words on a board! It is not just another game. It is a classic. For more than half a century, SCRaBBLe has been challenging the minds of both youth and adults.

A Bit of History...
Scrabble designed by Alfred Mosher Butts when he was a jobless architect in the Depression, was first published commercially in 1948 by James Brunot, one of Butts' friends. Eventually, Scrabble became the world's most popular word game, and it has now sold more than 100 million copies worldwide."

Awakenings: Turnover, Tart or Fried Pie?

Awakenings: Turnover, Tart or Fried Pie? | Human Interest | Scoop.it
Being one of the true GRITS (Girls Raised in the South), it was not unusual when growing up to have fried tarts during any occasion, any time of the day. The best were the fresh apple or fresh pear (hard to choose between those two, really!) However, if life demanded I make a choice, it would be the pear simply because of the pear tree in the back yard! Doesn't get any fresher than that! When I discovered this day's celebration, it's name was not familiar until reading the article Empanada shells make great tarts! My mouth started watering as the memories flooded my brain! 'Delicioso'!

Awakenings: Giddy-up! | Human Interest | Scoop.it
Giddy-up! Common words from a cowboy of the Old West, whether on horseback or the horse hitched to a stagecoach. Yet, none rang out any louder than from the riders of the Pony Express. Back in the days of the wild west, no Fed Ex was available, no Postal Service ran that far west, no planes, and delivery by ship was likely to take months if it ever got there at all.

This Day in History: April 3, 1860

Via Sharla Shults
Skuuppilehdet's insight:
Seeing the need for a specialized delivery service, Leavenworth and Pike’s Peak Express Company took an opportunity to expand into this void. From this important decision was born one of the most iconic pieces of American History—The Pony Express. No event in American History has captured the imagination of young and old alike, more than the excitement created by those young riders and their horses, as they rode across the western half of our continent.

Awakenings: PB&J All the Way | Human Interest | Scoop.it
A kid's staple in the brown-bag school lunch, as well as an all-time favorite snack, is the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, aka the PB&J. Of course, the same can be said for some adults since the PB&J has no age limit. That's because you get a lot of calories in a hurry when your energy level has bottomed out. Plus, it just tastes grr-r-r-reat!

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

Via Sharla Shults
Skuuppilehdet's insight:
Since the day someone spread peanut butter on one slice of bread and jam (probably homemade) on another slice of bread, then, slapped the two pieces together, kid-dom has never been the same! Even as adults, just the thought brings out the kid in all of us! You just don't outgrow the PB&J. Outrageous ingredients might be added, it may even be fried but the basic premise is still there. No way around it...it is still a PB&J!
