While Middleborough’s earliest Chinese immigrants experienced random and mercifully rare incidences of harassment, more official anti-Chinese discrimination was institutionalized in the Page Act of 1875, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, and subsequent laws which placed severe restrictions upon the emigration, residence and naturalization of Chinese in America.
