Awakenings: Cheese Sacrifice?

Awakenings: Cheese Sacrifice? | Human Interest | Scoop.it
Whoever is responsible for establishing various days of celebration certainly have a certain wit about 'them'. Today is a prime example. When you think about 'sacrificing' cheese, what comes first to your mind? Buying the best of the best and giving it away as a gift? That would indeed be a sacrifice. Of course, not without trying it first! Then, there are always the scrumptious recipes that call for a generous portion of cheese. Don't you 'sacrifice' the really good cheeses for super delicious dishes? Well, there is an altogether different possibility which is not so appetizing and a bit quirky to say the least.

National Crème Brûlée Day

The world of French desserts can be summed up in two words...pure pleasure! From taste to presentation, sheer artistry is at work. A perfect resultant is the sound of the spoon cracking the caramelized shell covering an expertly crafted Crème Brûlée. The Crème Brûlée typically has a custard base flavored with vanilla. However, it is sometimes flavored with lemon or orange (zest), rosemary, chocolate, coffee, liqueurs, green tea, pistachio, coconut, or other fruit. A matter of personal taste!"

On this day in 1965, singer-songwriter Bob Dylan rocks the world of folk music when he performs at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island and abandons his acoustic guitar for an electric one. By going electric, Dylan eventually moved rock and folk music closer together. He also infused rock and roll, known then for its mostly lightweight lyrics, with a more intellectual, poetic sensibility. [Source: History.com]"

"Guns N' Roses - Mainstream hard rock wasn't the same after members of Guns N' Roses sank their teeth into it.

Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin originally formed the band out of the ashes of two other groups—L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. Guns N' Roses played in a style that owed much more to the pure hard rock Stuck in the 70s than to the showy heavy metal of the 80s Music Mania.

Guns N' Roses made its big popular breakthrough on July 23, 1988

If the title of this posting had been 'Cake', there would be no question as to what it is about. There are thousands of different types of cakes in the world today, each culture with its own specialties, many of which never reach America's shores. For the cake, we need icing and one might want to try something different perhaps topping it off with penuche frosting. That's one possibility for penuche. Let's add a little extra pizazz to the title: Penuche Fudge. Now, let's get on with the celebration!

Upon landing, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong reported "The Eagle Has Landed." "Today's History Lesson...the American West

Outlaws and gunslingers of the old West share a unique persona. Visions of saloons, dance hall girls, whiskey and gambling immediately come to mind. These were the times when men were men who stood their ground and died with their boots on.

This Day in the Old West: July 19, 1879

When you hear the name "Doc" Holliday, do you envision days of the Wild West? Gamblers? Gunfighters? Outlaws? Does the Shootout at the OK Corral come to mind? Do you see Val Kilmer as "Doc" in the 1993 film Tombstone? It will come as no surprise if you answer "yes" to each question. Any and all of the above depict John Henry "Doc" Holliday."

Today's History Lesson...a familiar phrase

We say, as well as also hear, expressions and phrases on a rather regular basis most of the time repeating what was passed down to us via parents or grandparents. More often than not, we don't pay much attention to the history or perhaps a story behind the origin of such phrases.

This Day in History: July 18, 1914

Phrases come and go dependent upon the times and circumstances which bring them about. "Pie in the Sky" is an American phrase dating back to 1911, which was coined by labor activist Joe Hill in an early 20th century folk song, The Preacher and The Slave. The song written by Hill is a satiric attack on the Salvation Army whose preachers Hill decried for lulling workers into complacency.

July 13 is...
Barbershop Music Appreciation Day,

which was created in 2005 by Sweet Adelines International, "a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony." It was started to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of their organization. To appreciate barbershop music begins with first understanding its history.

A Bit of Barbershop History

There was a time when harmony thrived in a barbershop as celebrated back in April on Barbershop Quartet Day. The harmonizing came about while men waited their turn for a haircut. That's one way to pass the time and prevent boredom! At least it's the way it was in the last half of the 19th century. Not so much today since Barbershops are almost a thing of the past. Men now go to 'salons' much the same as their counterpart, women and women perform barbershop music much the same as their counterpart, men.

Today's History Lesson...WWI

War is an ugly beast. It shows no mercy regardless of age, race, creed, religion, gender or any other factor for that matter. The aftermath of war is tumultuous destruction leaving massive graves of blood and bone in its wake where strength and courage were put to the ultimate test. While on this day began what was hoped to be "the war to end all wars," unfortunately the war to accomplish such a task would be the one marking the end the world.

Continuing with the month of July being Ice Cream Month, it would do ice cream an injustice to not include a bit of trivia about the ice cream cone.
