'A lost collection of nearly 150 letters from the codebreaker Alan Turing has been uncovered in an old filing cabinet at the University of Manchester. The correspondence, which has not seen the light of day for at least 30 years, contains very little about Turing’s tortured personal life. It does, however, give an intriguing insight into his views on America.'

'Belsen (full name Bergen-Belsen) was set up in 1943. It was never used as a death-camp, but was still a place of unbelievable horrors and brutality. Towards the end of the war, thousands of Jews had been evacuated from camps in eastern Europe and marched west to avoid the advancing Soviet army. There were 40,000 prisoners at Belsen in April 1945, many dying each day, as well as thousands who had recently died and had not been buried.'

Mariko Oi writes, 'Japanese people often fail to understand why neighbouring countries harbour a grudge over events that happened in the 1930s and 40s. The reason, in many cases, is that they barely learned any 20th Century history. I myself only got a full picture when I left Japan and went to school in Australia.'

'The British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, flew to meet Hitler at his private mountain retreat in Berchtesgaden in an attempt to resolve the crisis. Three of the documents here are extracts from Chamberlain’s own record of the meeting. The other two documents are useful evidence of the kind of advice Chamberlain was getting at home in Britain.'

If you teach history/social studies this post is right up your alley. The website MadeFromHistory has put together 30 infographics that look at 30 key events in the last 100 years, and they do acknowledge that the have "left out quite a few events" due to space limitations. You can also find sections that focus on World War I, World War II, and Civil Rights as well as a Referenced Blog, which shares a wide variety of topics.

For many students, using visuals helps them to recall information more readily. If you teach history from the past 100 years it is worth checking out this website.

Visuals that include original source materials make classroom experiences much more relevant to students. It allows the story of the events to be made more real whether it is the experiences of WWI, WW II, or Civil Rights.
