A Man Bought A Home.. But Never Expected To Find This Untouched Treasure Inside

A Man Bought A Home.. But Never Expected To Find This Untouched Treasure Inside | Human Interest | Scoop.it

Furniture craftsman Nathan Chandler, however, got the real deal when he purchased a not-exactly-new home in 2009. The home was built in 1956, which wouldn't be remarkable, except for the fact that nothing in the home had changed since that year. Typically, houses go through a number of renovations, particularly appliance updates. But this house, from its construction until the day Chandler bought it, was a perfect early-60s capsule in perfect perfection. Despite it being owned, no one had ever lived there (due to personal reasons, which were not disclosed), and so the house remained in pristine condition for over 50 years.

Sixty classic cars unearthed after 50 years in massive barn find

Sixty classic cars unearthed after 50 years in massive barn find | Human Interest | Scoop.it
From Corvettes to Aston Martins, the rising prices commanded by classic cars — especially unrestored, mostly original examples — has created a goldmine for those who hunt for old vehicles rotting away unattended in some barn. Today, a French auction house revealed a discovery it called the King Tut of barn finds; a treasure trove of 60 European cars, including a rare Ferrari missing for decades, that had been slowly decaying in western France.

This is an unbelievable find, which could be considered the same as winning the lottery. One of these cars is worth around the $15 million dollar range meaning it is was of the rarest cars to be found.

Marian Anderson

Marian Anderson | Human Interest | Scoop.it

Marian Anderson was an African-American contralto who sang opera as well as traditional American songs (including spirituals) and became one of the most celebrated singers of the twentieth century. German-American pianist Franz Rupp was her permanent accompanist throughout most of her career (between 1940 & 1965).

As an African-American performer, Anderson faced much racism, including the 1939 refusal of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to allow Anderson to sing for an integrated audience in Constitution Hall — resulting in Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt to arrange for the singer to have an open-air concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Easter Sunday of 1939. Anderson broke other barriers, including becoming the first black person to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955.

In addition to her work as a performer, Anderson worked for human rights, including as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee and participating in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. She did sing at the March on Washington in 1963.

Among the awards Anderson won: the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Kennedy Center Honors, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her autobiography, My Lord, What A Morning, was published just after her appearance at the Met.

Women Admiring Nylon Stockings in 1940s (& LGBTQ History) | Human Interest | Scoop.it

Fun fact: Though being gay in the 40s sucked, being gay in the military was easier, and pretty common. There were apparently, at one point in time time so many lesbians in the military that when they tried to crack down on it, the girls wrote back and said “Look I can give you the names, but you’ll lose some of your best officers, and half your nurses and secretaries.” And they pret...

This caught my eye and I am saving it for my critical thinking class -  my question to my students this quarter is: what do we believe now that will be completely refuted in the future?  We used to think being the girl friend or wife was the ultimate success.

So what will change in another twenty years?
