ORAC's tarnished reputation doesn't diminish polyphenols' health benefits, expert says

ORAC's tarnished reputation doesn't diminish polyphenols' health benefits, expert says | Longevity science | Scoop.it
It has been almost a year since United States Department of Agriculture took down its ORAC database.  Now that this official reference point is gone, does this measure of antioxidant potential still have relevance in the marketplace?
Ray and Terry's 's insight:

Using the ORAC scale to understand antioxidant content in relative terms can still be useful. Comparing foods on this scale provides information that you can use to rank foods and evaluate the health benefits of a particular fruit or benefit in relation to others.

Green tea trumps rivals for antioxidant and antimicrobial properties

Green tea trumps rivals for antioxidant and antimicrobial properties | Longevity science | Scoop.it
A South Korean study evaluating the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of tea extracts found that green tea showed the highest antioxidant activity in most tests and potent antimicrobial activity.
Ray and Terry's 's insight:

Green tea contains 1/4 the caffeine of coffee and also provides l-theanine, a calming agent. Plus the active extract (EGCG) has been studied for its additional amazing health properties, including the ability to help prevent cancerous activity in the cells.

Why Do Homocysteine-Lowering B Vitamin and Antioxidant E Vitamin Supplementations Appear To Be Ineffective in the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases?

A review published in Cardiovascular Therapeutics examined recent reports of ineffective vitamin supplements. They found that some of the studies were poorly designed and inconclusive. There may have been complications due to subjects medications, as well.

The report concludes that vitamin use for cardiovascular disease cannot be scientifically rejected based solely on these studies. The authors believe that further research should be conducted to investigate the uses of vitamins for disease prevention.

Coffee Linked to Extreme Longevity - Vital Choice

Coffee Linked to Extreme Longevity - Vital Choice | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Countering some minor concerns (see our sidebar, “Coffee concerns: minor at most”), growing evidence indicate that coffee is probably a preventive-health powerhouse.

There’s little doubt that coffee’s promise stems from its abundance of highly healthful polyphenol-type compounds.

Although polyphenols are often called antioxidants, they don’t exert direct antioxidant effects in the body. Instead, they influence gene expression to produce antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other beneficial effects.

Pharmacological influence on processes of adjuvant arthritis: Effect of the combination of an antioxidant active substance with methotrexate

A new animal study indicates that carnosine helped mediate rheumatoid arthritis effects. Oxidative stress plays an integral part in arthritis. Carnosine and other antioxidant compounds can help ameliorate the symptoms through their free radical scavenging activity.

The study found:

Thus we can conclude that oxidative stress plays an important role in AA and could be controlled by suitable combination therapy of MTX and an antioxidant substance, as demonstrated for carnosine.

New reasons discovered for supplementing with alpha lipoic acid

New reasons discovered for supplementing with alpha lipoic acid | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant also used by the body to convert blood sugar into energy.

Emerging research indicates that ALA may have neuroprotective qualities and help to repair nerve damage and maintain healthy vision.

ALA combines synergistically with both glutathione and CoQ10 to maximize free radical protection...

These are just two of the mounting studies on ALA and glucose management:

--ALA helps prevent the oxidative stress that is linked to impaired glucose management.

--It may also help maintain healthy fasting glucose levels http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22374556

Study Shows Chocolate Prevents Colon Cancer

Study Shows Chocolate Prevents Colon Cancer | Longevity science | Scoop.it

It is not a definitive  prevention and more research is needed to elucidate the health benefits. However, chocolate (the purer the better) may help keep the colon healthier.

"Chocolate is rich in a particular variety of plant polyphenols which are powerful natural antioxidants. Though many plant foods contain polyphenols, chocolate seems to have particular potent health-promoting and disease fighting effects. These compounds include procyanidins, catechins and epicatec...
