Scientists map the wiring of the biological clock | KurzweilAI

Scientists map the wiring of the biological clock | KurzweilAI | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Researchers have reported the discovery of a crucial part of the biological clock in the brain: wiring that sets its accuracy to within a few minutes out of the 1440 minutes per day. This wiring uses the GABA (γ-amino-butyric acid) neurotransmitter to connect the individual cells of the biological clock in a fast network that changes strength with time of day.

Toxic interaction in neurons that leads to dementia and ALS | KurzweilAI

Toxic interaction in neurons that leads to dementia and ALS | KurzweilAI | Longevity science | Scoop.it
Researchers at Mayo Clinic in Florida have uncovered a toxic cellular process by which a protein that maintains the health of neurons becomes deficient and can lead to dementia.

The findings shed new light on the link between culprits implicated in two devastating neurological diseases: Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which afflicts physicist Stephen Hawking.

There is no cure for frontotemporal dementia, a disorder that affects personality, behavior and language and is second only to Alzheimer’s disease as the most common form of early-onset dementia.

Stem cell 'first aid' for rat stroke

Stem cell 'first aid' for rat stroke | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Stem cells given in the vital period immediately after a stroke may aid recovery, suggest researchers.

Rats injected with stem cells 30 minutes after a stroke had almost normal brain function restored within a fortnight.

The research, published in the journal Stem Cell Research and Therapy, adds to others which have found that stem cells could aid stroke patients by boosting the body's ability to repair tissue damage.

Common diabetes drug promotes development of brain stem cells | KurzweilAI

Common diabetes drug promotes development of brain stem cells | KurzweilAI | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Metformin, a drug commonly used to treat Type II diabetes, can help trigger the pathway used to instruct stem cells in the brain to become nerve cells researchers at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) have found.

Brain stem cells and the neural cells they generate play a role in the repair of the injured or degenerating brain. This study suggests a novel therapeutic approach to treating people with brain injuries or potentially even neurodegenerative diseases.

Partial Hand Function Restored in Quadriplegic Patient

Partial Hand Function Restored in Quadriplegic Patient | Longevity science | Scoop.it

We just saw that a patient was able to control a robotic arm using her thoughts. She was able to give herself a sip of a drink.

Now, surgeons at the Washington University School of Medicine have rerouted working nerves in the upper arms of a quadriplegic patient, to restore some of he patient's hand function.
