Graham Watson's insight:

The Observer makes the case for an incoming Labour government to alter the focus of tax policy: away from tax cuts for the rich and in favour of measures to reduce child poverty, arguing that not only is there a moral imperative but that it makes economic sense too, not least given shaming levels of child poverty.

It's an interesting argument and revolves around one of the fundamental questions that underpins contemporary economic thought. Incentives.

Free market economists will tell you that lowering taxes on the rich incentivizes them to work harder and be more innovative; equally, offering more support to the poor reduces the incentive for them to 'strive'. And yet, it's taken for granted that the MPC of the latter is higher than the MPC of the former, so increasing their incomes is likely to have more of an effect on consumer spending and thus aggregate demand.

That, in a nutshell, is the central policy dilemma - demand-side v supply-side; rich versus poor

I'd have more respect for the Chancellor if he'd describe the idea of pre-election tax cuts as 'bribes' and suggest that such a move prioritises the party of government's interests over those of the nation, but that would be asking too much.

So, I'll settle on a compromise. In the long-term, he's probably right of course, and tax cuts have the capacity to have positive demand- and supply-side effects, but I suspect that any pre-election tax cuts would almost exclusively target the former.

There's also the potential for a competition here. Complete the following sentence: "The economy would be more successful if..."

Phillip Inman makes the very valid point that current problems in the labour market aren't demand-side, and thus the fact that interest rates are going to rise, such that the Bank of England is anticipating a doubling of unemployment in the next two years, isn't the solution.

Yes, there might be an uptick in wage growth that could contribute to inflationary pressure, but the fact of the matter is that increasing the labour supply would offset this.

And then he talks about the economically inactive - including the over-50s who've opted out of the labour market - without mentioning the elephant in the room. Brexit.

I'll put this here - the inflationary implications of this are perhaps the most significant consideration here. However, the article flags up the fact that there are two factors driving inflation. Demand-side and supply-side factors are both at play - and you should be able to draw a diagram to show this.

Larry Elliott with a detailed analysis of the Autumn Statement, looking at the notion of '£13bn fiscal headroom' and how the Chancellor might go about spending it. The fact that he's got this wiggly room is largely due to the effects of fiscal drag as more people are dragged into higher tax bands.

The essential dilemma appears to be whether tax cuts or government spending should be focused upon the demand-side or the supply-side of the economy. The former is risky at a time when inflation remains problematic, and growth low, the latter is unlikely to be effective given the limited amount the Chancellor has to spend.

This video is basically discussing what inflation is. Inflation is a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money. "In 1980, for example, a movie ticket cost on average $2.89. By 2019, the average price of a movie ticket had risen to $9.16. If you saved a $10 bill from 1980, it would buy two fewer movie tickets in 2019 than it would have nearly four decades earlier."-from Forbes

The IFS view of the budget is explored by the BBC, with particular focus on the coronavirus element of the spending plans announced. It's praise, tempered with realism, with the IFS suggest that the plan is well targeted but limited, and more focused on demand-side pressures than supply-side pressures, which might arise if workers are unable to get in to work.
