Will Hutton's column looking at the government's handling of the energy crisis, unfavourably comparing it with that adopted in the US and continental Europe.
The £150bn energy support programme is, in his view, ill-thought out and unfair, and the government's apparent unwillingness to fund a £15m information campaign encouraging us to be more energy efficient mystifying, not least given that the CEO of Shell seems to assume that higher taxes on energy companies are inevitable.
It is a clash of world views - the interventionist versus the libertarian - and only time will tell which is the most appropriate approach.
