Twitter Dominates Live TV Because Social TV Is Failing

Twitter Dominates Live TV Because Social TV Is Failing | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

So here is the undeniable fact: Twitter currently dominates live TV because it enables these “come-in come-out” experiences that are light, delightful and informative. But ultimately, Twitter is also dominating because of the mistakes we are making in the social TV industry.

The problem today with second screen apps is the assumptions around existing second screen behavior. It’s true that people are also on their laptops, smartphones or tablets while watching TV. But people are checking email, on Facebook, and doing other things. The other major problem is that second screen apps fail to answer the ultimate question: Why should a user open up YOUR app versus the other billion apps out there around TV?

Vidpresso debuts low-cost way to get social TV updates on air

Vidpresso debuts low-cost way to get social TV updates on air | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

A new social TV startup called Vidpresso launched a new product today that enables TV operations to easily display tweets and Facebook updates on the air. While the technology isn’t new, the price may catch the eye of cost-conscious TV stations: the product starts at $400 a month.

The interface is very simple. You start by adding social accounts into the system, and the tool displays the latest updates, @ mentions and Facebook comments in an integrated stream. Producers can quickly pick the updates and comments they want and click the “send to air” button.

Why is Discovery so hard to implement for video services?

Why is Discovery so hard to implement for video services? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Last week, Google said it was trying to tackle one of the hardest problems on the internet -- video Discovery.

Looking at consumer video services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and even GoogleTV) and their second screen counterparts (Matcha, Fanhattan, BuddyTV, etc), the admission of the challenge is painfully evident in the user interface the consumer faces and the result of the Discovery process.

But let's back up a bit first. What is Discovery? How does it relate to Search and Recommendation? I think we will find wide agreement that the concept of Search is one where you know what you are looking for and are trying to find it. Now this can be more complex than "Where can I find a legal version of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol that I can watch in my living room right now?" (which itself can be challenging in today's service offerings). It is not usually as complex as the problem Shazam solves in the music industry ("what is the name of that song that sounds like..."), but can be difficult (I know the actor who was in the movie or what it was about). Search is decidedly a "lean forward" experience, and as most of us have found out over the last 5 years, it incredibly difficult to implement on a 10-foot remote experience, with various virtual keyboards or fancy remotes trying to help us solve this problem.

Bluefin Labs Launches Social TV Analytics Product Built for Brands

Bluefin Labs Launches Social TV Analytics Product Built for Brands | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Bluefin Labs, the social TV analytics company, today announced the launch of Signals Brand Edition, a platform that measures and analyzes the social media performance of TV ad campaigns at scale. Since the birth of television advertising, there has never been an automated system that tracks all commercials -- where they are running and how people are responding in social media -- until now. Bluefin Labs launches with several initial clients including PepsiCo, Kraft Foods, Mars, Humana and Quicken Loans, together with agency partners Starcom MediaVest Group, Hill Holliday, Horizon Media, Initiative, MediaCom, Optimedia and Zenith Media.

The introduction of Signals Brand Edition gives brands the ability to track commercials that run across U.S. national television, see a clear picture of when and where they air, and gain insight into how a TV campaign moves consumer conversation in social media. Via an online dashboard, brands can now measure the impact of TV ads on brand conversation and discover the volume of social media users exposed to their TV ads. Signals Brand Edition also analyzes brand and lifestyle affinities of TV audiences, so brands can better target their TV campaign toward consumers who are most likely to respond and engage.

NAB wrap-up: Social features creep into TV production gear

NAB wrap-up: Social features creep into TV production gear | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Over a decade ago, Lost Remote was the first blog to cover the National Association of Broadcasters convention — a huge showcase of television technology in Las Vegas — about how the internet was changing the business. This year, we returned to NAB to see how social TV is impacting production, from tech to workflow. Like the late 90s with the internet, it’s still early, but social TV is beginning to make inroads.

“There are so many technology providers here, and the interest in social TV is disproportionate to the innovation,” said Sam Decker, CEO of Mass Relevance. “It’s such a small part of all the real estate and discussions that are happening.” But he said he sees the technical crowd beginning to react to demands from producers who want more social functionality in the production process.

One of the biggest trends is focused on making it easy for producers to integrate social content on-air. Until now, displaying a tweet or a poll has been extremely labor-intensive (put poll on website, tease website from on-air, refresh poll results, create graphic of results, write them into script, drop it into the rundown.) But new partnerships are automating the entire process, tying it to social curation and the second screen.

KIT Digital Creates Temporal Tagging Framework in Cloud-Based Broadcast Playout System

KIT Digital Creates Temporal Tagging Framework in Cloud-Based Broadcast Playout System | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

According to Julian Clover at Broadband TV News, KIT digital has implemented temporal tagging into its new suite of apps for RTE, the Irish public broadcaster who have picked KIT Cosmos cloud-based solution for future endeavors. Such an approach would work not only with broadcast and on demand content, but also radio.

Feargal Kelly, KIT digital’s VP of media solutions, says broadcasters need to move way from what he calls ‘passive second screen socialising’ to one that creates stickiness and increases viewer engagement with the content.

“The level of misunderstanding of the second screen socializing purpose is so high, that some of the apps that allow viewers to message each other while watching TV are supplied by broadcasters and channel owners themselves,” he says.

Kelly says that rather than place watermarking within the video, as is the case with the Zeebox social media application, broadcasters should put effort into the backend as was the case with Red Button apps. By using metadata it becomes possible to sync content that is frame accurate.

Seevibes Launches Seevibes Score as Standard Measurement for TV Audience Engagement in Social Media | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Seevibes has built a social media tool dedicated to monitoring and analyzing TV broadcasts. The technology platform maps everything showing on TV to all the relevant social media conversations about the shows and the commercials. To date, Seevibes’ social TV data covers 30 TV networks and 1000 TV shows across Canada. The company measures the activity of viewers on social networks to calculate market share of any given TV broadcast and provides detailed demographics on the viewers. Social media analysis: TV’s next revolution?

Social media analysis: TV’s next revolution? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Deb Roy, a faculty member at MIT and founder of Bluefin Labs, a Social TV solutions company, gave a mind-blowing social TV presentation at Paris-based internet gathering LeWeb last week. Sure, there’s been lots of talk of late about social TV: but to our knowledge, few companies are analysing social media conversations as deeply as Bluefin Labs right now.

For Roy, the initial aim of his company was to “study the interplay between language and context in TV.” Henry Ford’s infamous claim that “half my advertising is wasted; I just don’t know which half” was also a key inspiration, said Roy. Indeed, the feedback loop social media provides can be particularly useful for brands, producers and broadcasters.

VH1's Co-Star iPad App Is Like A DVR for Tweets

VH1's Co-Star iPad App Is Like A DVR for Tweets | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
VH1 knew that its primarily young and tech-savvy viewers were using mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad to share information with their friends while watching its shows. At the same time, it realized that many viewers weren’t necessarily tuning into live airings while they were tweeting or messaging their friends on Facebook. So the cable network has released a new companion iPad app for its programming, called VH1 Co-Star, which combines both social sharing with on-demand viewing.

VH1 Co-Star works like most second-screen social sharing apps: Users can log in via Twitter or Facebook, allowing them to see messages from their friends while they watch a show, along with highlighted tweets from other viewers and members of a shows’ cast. But the twist is that the Co-Star app’s WatchWith feature basically emulates the live social experience, even if viewers are tuning in to a re-run or a recording on their DVRs.

Beyond Smart TV: ‘Surfaces’ Prototype Reveals the Television of Tomorrow

Beyond Smart TV: ‘Surfaces’ Prototype Reveals the Television of Tomorrow | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

We’ve seen the future of television, and we want it now.

NDS, a company that develops DRM security and DVR technology for pay-TV providers like Cox and DirecTV, has developed a proof-of-concept called Surfaces that shows how television could become the center of a much more compelling, immersive living room experience.

The prototype jettisons the single, static screen that’s been a hardware mainstay since the golden age of television. In its place is a slick, highly customized room-sized desktop that hosts not only a traditional widescreen TV image, but also windows for a plethora of digital accoutrements.

It could be exactly what the TV industry needs to stay relevant.

Based on ToolsOnAir´s proven real-time graphic engine, just:social provides a comprehensive toolkit of social media integration for video broadcasters.

"Traditionally the expense of integration has made it cost prohibitive for all but a few large-budget applications. Our just:social collaboration with ToolsOnAir provides a powerful, yet affordable platform utilizing ToolsOnAir´s proven timeline-based playout technology."

CBC deploys never.no interactivity suite to give viewers a voice during 'Power & Politics’ | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

never.no has announced that CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada's national public broadcaster, uses never.no's Interactivity Suite (IS) to display Facebook and Twitter comments, conduct real-time polling, and otherwise interact with audience members during its news show "Power & Politics."

The shows' producers use IS in the control room to ingest social media and user-generated content in real-time, moderate that content, and then put it on the air. IS supports many live production systems and protocols, and it gives day-to-day operators a single place in which to view incoming comments and interactions rather than monitor different services and social networks individually. Likewise, operators can control the on-air graphics from within the same interface.

SnappyTV unveils Live Video Editor with cloud-based DVR during State of the Union | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The online video world got its first look at SnappyTV during the 2011 State of the Union Address. One year later, SnappyTV is using the 2012 Address to test and promote its new Pro Editor, which works with a cloud-based DVR.

The existing SnappyTV, which debuted last year, is a second-screen system where viewers can watch an event on TV and then instantly grab a video clip of it online to share through blogs or social networks. The PGA and Turner Sports partnered with SnappyTV in August to promote the PGA Championship.

The Pro Editor version, which will debut in beta during the State of the Union (Tuesday, January 24 at 9PM ET) is a much more flexible system. It works with a cloud-based DVR, allowing people to view the Address right on their computer, and to view and clip moments from any place within the speech. Videos can then be shared on blogs or social networks.
