BroadThinking 14: Forget Multiscreen, We're Heading Towards ONE Screen

BroadThinking 14: Forget Multiscreen, We're Heading Towards ONE Screen | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

This year the EBU BroadThinking Conference was sounding like a holistic swirl, a milestone in the trend of technology to define sets that are greater than the sum of their parts, through creative evolution. « Where Broadcast Meets BroadBand », you get some interesting fusion effect occurring and diluting the traditional boundaries of the screens, with the handheld devices being part of the big screen experience or extending it rather than trying to scalp it, in an environment where all the devices converge towards a restricted set of standards rather than tracing their own line.

While we by default think that standardization kills creativity, events like BroadThinking show that it’s the opposite: if we gather energies to solve common problems together, we can both come up with a more evolved solution and concentrate on what’s important past the pixel grid: the user experience, so consistent across screens that you forget there’s more than one screen involved.

When Will H.265 HEVC Arrive and What Will it Mean for MPEG DASH?

When Will H.265 HEVC Arrive and What Will it Mean for MPEG DASH? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The latest draft of the high-efficiency video coding codec appears to point to early 2013 for the final specification.

Last year's MPEG standards buzz was around DASH (dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP) which provides a standardized way to segment H.264-based MP4 files for fragmented delivery. This year's end-of-year buzz may very well be around the high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) codec set to replace H.264.

So how does this move to H.265 impact DASH?

IBC interview : Next-generation compression: the market for HEVC and DASH

IBC interview : Next-generation compression: the market for HEVC and DASH | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Despite increases in network capacity over the last decade, the thirst for more and higher quality video means compression is still a critical element in TV delivery. In this IBC2011 discussion, Dr Paul Stallard and Matthew Goldman from the CTO Group at Ericsson's TV Business consider next-generation compression technologies including HEVC and MPEG DASH. HEVC could support full-resolution 3DTV, ultra high-def and provide a leapfrog option for HD service providers using M2. It could also ensure longer battery life for mobiles and tablets decoding video. Meanwhile, DASH could bring some much-needed rationalisation to the delivery of adaptive bit rate services.

BBC starts Ultra-HD trials with DVB-DASH

BBC starts Ultra-HD trials with DVB-DASH | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The BBC has started its Ultra-HD closed trials from the World Cup tournament in Brazil. The BBC Research & Development department has partnered with Arqiva for the trials that will use the latest DVB-DASH profile IP.

The UHD production will be received in the UK from an H.264/AVC satellite contribution feed. For both DTT and IP we will be using Main Profile HEVC to compress the video to distribution bitrates that can be sustained within a DVB network and a super-fast broadband line. The frame rate being used is 59.94Hz as that is the standard in Brazil.

The DTT trial will be transmitted from Crystal Palace (London), Winter Hill (Manchester) and Black Hill (Glasgow). The transmissions are just starting up now. As we are using the same T2 modulation parameters that are used for HD multiplexes the signal can be received on current consumer equipment, I’m not aware of any equipment which can decode the video. Though some existing HD models may tune the service and decode the audio.

The stream will use the latest DVB-DASH profile and is geo-IP locked to the UK only.

MPEG-DASH Ecosystem Status

MPEG-DASH Ecosystem Status | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

How dynamic is MPEG-DASH Ecosystem after IBC 2013 ? Here is an analysis of the latest trends and an extensive industry DASH-compliant solutions directory.

While most of IBC’s buzz was generated by the shiny HEVC + 4K couple, it was a good occasion to stand back from the hype and measure how one of the most important video standards (at least for the OTT world) had spread over the industry since last year. MPEG-DASH is not sexy (let’s remember that it’s basically a collection of XML schemes), it’s a bit boring (as it’s usually demonstrated with the Big Buck Bunny that you saw not less than 2.000 times) and it’s complex – but once you go past those defaults, you might find that its potential to simplify your workflows and boost the profitability of your video service is high…

And that’s precisely what the industry has finally understood: video distributors want to streamline their workflows and save their storage budgets by reducing the number of output formats, they search for ways to build long term strategies with evolutive solutions – and all of this implies rolling away from proprietary ABR solutions like Smooth Streaming, HLS, HDS and the now defunct Widevine WVM proprietary packaging format (rest in peace), DASH’s first victim.

Multimedia Communication: Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP using High Efficiency Video Coding (DASH+HEVC)

Multimedia Communication: Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP using High Efficiency Video Coding (DASH+HEVC) | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The transport of HEVC using DASH seems to be a hot topic in media, see for example here, here, here, andhere. In this blog post I'd like to highlight technical changes in order to support HEVC over DASH. The immediate response would be that no updates of DASH are required to support HEVC as DASH is coding format agonistic but the devil is in the detail. In fact, the core DASH specification [ISO/IEC 23009-1:2012] doesn't require any updates but the file format and transport stream standards are currently amended. This may impact DASH as its segment formats are based on the file format and transport stream.

Allegro releases first live HEVC broadcast encoder

Allegro releases first live HEVC broadcast encoder | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Allegro DVT AL1200 and AL2200 are the world first live broadcast encoder and transcoder for HEVC. They are aligned with the latest standard revisions in order to provide glowing video quality, at a fraction of the bandwith required for MPEG-2 and H.264. With support for Transport Stream output and MPEG-DASH, they are well adapted for operators willing to early adopt this new compression standard.

Bitrate savings brought by HEVC allow premium video delivery at resolutions and places that operators and broadcasters were only dreaming of before. Furthermore, most of the delivery pipeline remains untouched, since HEVC will make use of agnostic delivery protocols such as MPEG-2 Transport Stream and MPEG-DASH.

Adaptive Bitrate Streaming Gets Serious in 2012

Adaptive Bitrate Streaming Gets Serious in 2012 | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

In a decade or so down the line, experts looking back likely will say that 2012 was the year cable operators and the rest of the telecommunications industry pivoted from basic “get it out there” multiscreen platforms to those that work with a far higher level of precision and efficiency.

That’s the plan, at least. What happens remains to be seen. What is clear is that the industry is poised to take several important steps beyond the “one off” catch-as-catch-can approach that has dominated to date. “The year 2011 saw most — if not all — the major service providers world-wide investigating adaptive streaming, ranging from lab investigations to highly publicized deployments,” wrote Yuval Fisher, chief technology officer of RGB Networks in response to emailed questions. “The market has matured quickly, with operators’ expectations quickly rising from the initial ‘help me just see how this works’ to ‘I need high video quality, high-availability equipment.’”

MPEG news: a report from the 98th meeting, Geneva, Switzerland

MPEG news: a report from the 98th meeting, Geneva, Switzerland | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

... MPEG news from its 98th meeting in Geneva, Switzerland with less than 140 characters and a lot of acronyms. The official press release is, as usual, here. As you can see from the press release, MPEG produced significant results, namely:

- MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) ratified

- 3D Video Coding: Evaluation of responses to Call for Proposals

- MPEG royalty free video coding: Internet Video Coding (IVC) + Web Video Coding (WebVC)

- High Efficiency Coding and Media Delivery in Heterogeneous Environments: MPEG-H comprising MMT, HEVC, 3DAC

- Compact Descriptors for Visual Search (CDVS): Evaluation of responses to the Call for Proposals

- Call for requirements: Multimedia Preservation Description Information (MPDI)

- MPEG Augmented Reality (AR)

As you can see, a long list of achievements within a single meeting but let's dig inside. For each topic I've also tried to provide some research issues which I think are worth to investigate both inside and outside MPEG.
