In this study, the authors present a genetically encoded device (DNAi) based on CRISPR system. DNAi allows to degrade specific intracellular DNA with an inducible and targeted manner. When a plasmid is targeted, it is rapidly lost from a population, and when the genome is targeted, this results in rapid cell death. The DNAi device is non-toxic when carried in the genome, is stable for months and does not impart background activity until induced.
